About DecibelMeter
DecibelMeter is a free, browser-based sound level measurement tool designed to provide accessible noise level awareness to anyone with a modern web browser and a microphone.
Our Mission
Hearing damage from noise exposure is preventable, yet many people don't realize how loud their environment actually is. DecibelMeter makes it easy to measure and understand sound levels, helping users make informed decisions about noise exposure.
Who It's For
DecibelMeter is for anyone curious about the sound levels around them: people checking whether their home, office, or street is noisy, concertgoers and musicians keeping an eye on exposure, parents monitoring kids' environments, and anyone learning about the decibel scale. The tool is designed so that no technical or acoustic background is needed to get useful readings.
How It Works
DecibelMeter uses the Web Audio API to capture audio from your device's microphone and process it in real-time. All calculations happen locally in your browser — no audio data is ever uploaded to a server.
The tool applies frequency weighting (A, C, and Z) and time weighting algorithms to provide measurements that approximate what a dedicated sound level meter would measure.
How the Tool Is Developed and Maintained
DecibelMeter is developed and maintained by an independent developer. The tool is built on standard web technologies (Web Audio API and modern browser features) so it runs on any device with a supported browser. Updates are released when improvements to the measurement algorithms, the interface, or the educational content are ready. Bugs reported through the contact page are reviewed and addressed where possible.
Our Commitments
- Accuracy: we are transparent about what the tool can and cannot do, and we never present estimates as certified measurements.
- Usability: the tool is free, requires no account, and is designed to be simple on desktop and mobile.
- Privacy: audio never leaves your device, and we collect no personal data as a matter of design. See our Privacy Policy.
- Transparency: limitations are documented openly — in the tool itself, on the Learn page, and in our Disclaimer.
Privacy First
Your privacy is fundamental to our design. Microphone audio is processed entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. No audio recordings are stored or transmitted. Measurement data is stored locally on your device using browser storage APIs.
Limitations
We believe in transparency. Consumer microphones are designed for voice communication, not precision measurement. While our algorithms are mathematically sound, the accuracy of readings depends on your device's microphone quality and settings.
For professional noise assessments and regulatory compliance, certified sound level meters that meet standards like IEC 61672 should be used.
Open & Free
DecibelMeter is free to use with no account required. We don't currently show ads, and we don't sell user data. The tool exists to help people understand and manage their noise exposure.
