What Is a Decibel?

A decibel (dB) is the unit used to express the intensity of a sound, formally called the sound pressure level. It compares the pressure of a sound wave against a fixed reference level — roughly the quietest sound a young adult can hear. Instead of measuring sound in linear units of pressure, the decibel scale uses a logarithm, because the human ear can handle an enormous range: from a whisper to a jet engine, pressures differ by a factor of about ten million.

That compression is why the scale goes from roughly 0 dB (threshold of hearing) to about120–140 dB (pain and immediate damage risk). Each step of 10 dB represents a tenfold increase in sound energy — and sounds roughly twice as loud to the ear. So 50 dB is not a "little more" than 40 dB; it is ten times the acoustic energy.

How the Decibel Scale Works

The dB scale is logarithmic, which changes how you should think about the numbers:

This is why a single "loud" sound source can dominate a room: adding a second fan raises the total by only about 3 dB, even though the room feels nearly the same. Small numeric differences on the meter can hide large physical differences in the sound field.

Important: levels quoted in everyday tables — including this one — are approximate. Real readings depend on distance, the environment, and the measuring device. Treat charts as orientation, not as a precision instrument.

All values assume a typical listening distance (1–3 meters) and normal indoor acoustics. Outdoors, with no walls to reflect sound, levels drop faster with distance.

What does 30 dB sound like?

30 dB is very quiet: a soft whisper a meter away, a quiet library, or a rural area at night. It is the kind of level where you can hear the refrigerator humming and your own breathing. Most phones can measure it, but only roughly — their microphones are less sensitive at low levels.

What does 40 dB sound like?

40 dB is a quiet indoor space: a hushed office, a quiet residential street at night, light rainfall. Many people use 40 dB as a reference for a "peaceful" indoor environment, though quiet bedrooms are often closer to 30 dB.

What does 50 dB sound like?

50 dB is moderate background noise: a quiet suburb during the day, moderate rainfall, or quiet conversation. It is still comfortable and generally safe for any duration.

What does 60 dB sound like?

60 dB is normal conversation at arm's length, background music, or a dishwasher running. This is the everyday level of a typical home during daytime and is safe for unlimited exposure.

What does 70 dB sound like?

70 dB is a busy street, a vacuum cleaner, a loud conversation, or a TV at normal volume. Levels below 70 dB are generally considered safe no matter how long you hear them. This is about where "noticeably loud" begins.

What does 80 dB sound like?

80 dB is heavy traffic, a noisy restaurant, an alarm clock, or a garbage disposal. It is loud enough to make conversation effortful, but a brief exposure is not a concern for most people.

What does 85 dB mean?

85 dB is the level where prolonged exposure starts to matter. According to NIOSH, eight hours of continuous exposure at 85 dBA is the recommended limit for occupational noise. A noisy lawnmower or blender sits near here. The safe duration halves with every 3 dB increase.

What does 90 dB sound like?

90 dB is power tools, shouting at close range, or a subway train passing. NIOSH guidance allows only about two hours at this level. If your environment regularly measures 90 dB, hearing protection is worth taking seriously.

What does 100 dB sound like?

100 dB is a motorcycle, chainsaw, jackhammer, factory floor, or headphones at maximum volume. At this level the recommended exposure is roughly 15 minutes. It is common at live events — and a common cause of after-concert ringing ears.

What does 110 dB sound like?

110 dB is a concert close to the speakers, a nightclub, or a sporting event with a loud crowd. Exposure of more than a few minutes at 110 dB carries real risk, and hearing protection is strongly advised.

What does 120 dB sound like?

120 dB is the approximate pain threshold: a siren nearby, thunder overhead, or a jet takeoff at a distance. Sounds at or above 120 dB can cause immediate hearing damage — this is the level where one short burst can already injure the ear.

Sound Intensity vs. Loudness

Intensity is a physical property of the sound wave — the energy it carries. Loudnessis a perceptual experience — how loud it feels to a human listener. The decibel scale measures the physical side, but the ear does not respond equally to all frequencies. A 60 dB tone at 100 Hz and a 60 dB tone at 2 kHz feel very different, which is why sound level meters apply frequency weighting: A-weighting (dBA) approximates the ear's sensitivity curve and is the standard for noise exposure measurements.

Loudness also depends on the listener. The same 80 dB reading feels louder to someone exposed to quiet music all day than to a construction worker used to tools. That is another reason why "what dB level is loud" is best answered with measurements rather than guesses.

How Distance Affects Measurements

Sound level drops as you move away from the source. Outdoors, with no reflections, the level falls by about6 dB each time the distance doubles — the "inverse square law." Indoors it is more complicated: walls, floors, and furniture reflect sound, so the drop is usually smaller (roughly 3–4 dB per doubling).

Why Different Devices Show Different Readings

Point two phones at the same sound and they will often disagree by 5–10 dB or more. The reasons are physical:
